Faced ego in the labyrinth of unconsciousness
Jiyon Kim (Curator)

The work of ByoungLae Park is focused on reconstructing the present from the world of one’s unconsciousness by past events and places. As the artist expresses the unconsciousness of experience can’t be understood easily but if there is a special sign it will show itself naturally. The sign reacts when the present and the unconsciousness bump into each other. At this point the artist can find the way to oneself. The meeting point is the border of the present and the past. At the same time this point is the first step of the artist’s awakening of unconsciousness. This sometimes brings back past memories like places or games that the artist liked in the past.
As in the "Half-Moon Game (2007)" when the man realizes that he was imaging playing with the people with the mask or as in the "Elastic cord playing (2008)" when the man meets his own self in the dark and plays with himself but can’t tell who is who. In these works of the author one can understand the characteristic of the author such as describing the unconsciousness and consciousness through the time and space and showing the mixed situation .
Especially in "Half-Moon Game (2007)" the people with masks that the man met were characters of a TV cartoon that was made for educating kids about anti-communism. And the game that they played was also the game that kids played at that time. Through this the author was telling us that when a person’s unconsciousness and consciousness interact a new world can be made.
At the same time the author wants to explain the relation between an individual and the society related with one’s sub-consciousness.
The new "Elastic cord playing" wants to show the different side of one’s ego, the illusion between the positive side and the negative side of I and the other myself.
Specially the artist is trying to phase through consciously understanding that the person who I’m seeing is myself and at the same time the person is an individual me and finally finding my true character. The artist wants to talk about understanding myself through one’s unconsciousness. How the unconsciousness and lost memories can affect one’s present life. Through this the artist also is talking about how one is living in the present world and coping with the society.
